Help needed please mk5

Postby thevaletmann » Thu Feb 18, 2010 11:14 pm

'96 mk5 2.5d questions

After searching the forums I have come up with a few answers that I would like clarifying
I have a metal tube leading from the exhaust manifold upto the air intake ending in bowl type thing. This has a knuckle just before bend in pipe which is blowing gasses(sorry for crud description not sure how to upload pics). Is this the EGR and can it be blanked and how? Will it help the running of the engine. Just changed fuel filter as she was running really bad (still is but is slightly better) and some threads say doing this will help.
Engine stalls when dropping revs.
I don't want to spend to much money incase of underlying probs, so a service will be done if anybody can help with my some of probs listed here please  .

Also squealing on start up. Belts arn't to bad but not new. How do i tighten these.
Pully on right hand side of engine has a belt that is wobbling but not sure what this belt is. Will this be squealing?
Cam belt has white writing on still looks new so thats been changed fairly recently.
Engine running on bio-diesel by previous owner. Been told this is not good could have clogged up fuel pump. Filter was pretty? murkey. Will running this with proper diesel help to clean it through? Is there a diesel additive that could help clean injectors etc.

Sorry for being a newb. I have searched a good few threads.

Cheers

Cheers for that. I had looked at that thread but couldn't work it out. Read it thoroughly now and sort of understand. Is it just basicly opening up that flap to keep airfolw constant and to by pass the metal tube with a bowl on it..lol. This in theory should keep engine breathing properly???

Wow. Cheers again. I think the belt that is wobbling is on the outside of the engine. I think it's the PAS steering belt not sure though?

The belt running from crank pulley to the near side of the engine is for the power steering. The alternator belt very often squeals on start-up until the battery has been replenished. The adjustment is a block and long screw at the alternator. Slacken the bolt at the top and the long bolt at the bottom of the alternator, tighten the belt with the long screw and then tighten the bolts again. You should just be able to twist the belt 90 degrees by hand.

Cheers Timbo, will have a look over the weekend.

Tried the egr bypass as mentioned in previous answer and found that this has been done already!!! also found that the airfilter was missing as the intake pipe was well dirty with soot. Will this be causing my problems of it stalling when coming down from hih revs. Can this be cleaned etc.
As always any help would be appreciated.
Also if I put a fuel additive in the tank i.e redex, will this help to clear bio diesel gunge build up? :?
