Lack of power to the solenoid - smiley 95

Postby transit666 » Fri Feb 19, 2010 8:48 pm

hi all.
Small problem of starting my van is ,

To start it i have turn the key on at the dash . lift the bonnet..

Stick a postive jump lead on battery and touch the small connector on the solenoid to start it .

Has anyone had this problem ? not sure if its a break in the wire , but it seems to lost all power .. hmmm...

Allso the orange light came for abit today while i was driving it then went off ? but not overheating .. hmmm...

Has trip the immobiliser out of action , blocking it from starting in the correct way... :?
When the keys turns the starter relay clicks and the solenoid allso ....

Cheers Transit666. :)

It may be of no help at all but I had a similar problem with my van of a similar vintage. I could get it to run if I fired it up on easy start then, apparently it had enough current to keep the solenoid open.

I didnt make the repair but from memory the guy who did mentioned something about a dry joint on the ignition barrel. It might be worth a look.

Good luck and I hope you find the fault.

hi all ,
Ive taken the bull by the horns today !!!! and snapped them off !!!

Taken the the cowling off and expose the the big black plug which goes to the ignition barrel.

Then run a wire from the solenoid small connection into bulkhead to the big black connector .
Theres a orange and white wire on the low power side. stuck the wire into there , and guess wot !

Magic happen : it starts on the key .... everytime .. problem solved .. well for now ...
Ps . i had a vauxhall corse combi , years ago someone seem to do the same thing , thats were got the idea from in the end ..

Yes i know were the solenoid is on the side of the starter... :o
but as the other member said before hand ,
theres a starter relay hidden behind the glovebox next to the control mode box . thats what we talkin about ... which allso part of the starting side which is could be faulty ..

Ive allready replaced the starter motor , so fault is not there....

i was not thinking of on the starter but on the inner wing , do they not have a 50 amp relay to drop the load on the ignition switch still?

Yip! That's where my starter relay is too. Not 50A though, it's rated at 80A.

oh yes!!!! mines there too!!!

Funny enough i did look at the fusebox a couple weeks ago .. (quickly)
its got a blue fuse and a clearish yellow looking one to the front of the box , not sure of the ampish... 50-60 ?

looking close at it there don't seem to be the metal strip across .. Hmmmm i think that may be a blown fuse .

Try to pull it out , but does'nt shift to get a better look .
Do you have to use pilers on to remove ?
It must have blown when i try to move it on the key when the battery was just about to die..
Hmmm ......
Cheers guys ..

The fuses you mean are bolted through the sides, easiest to remove battery to gain access.
