How long to bleed fuel system?

Ive just had the injection pump rebuilt (late bosch for 190 n a diesel). Ive put it back on and got all the timing pins in place but it seems to be taking ages to bleed the system and get it to start. Ive drained three batteries now just from cranking it over.

The fuel filter is full and stays full. Fuel is coming out of the filter and going into the pump but there is apparently no fuel getting to the fuel pipe at the timing belt end of the pump, just a load of air bubbles under the banjo bolt. I can hear the solenoid click when I turn the key.

Sorted it now thanks to some advise elsewhere.

Apparently a whiff of easy start in the air intake is enough to prime the pump but cranking alone wont prime it.

Anyway, all sorted now.
