oil leak

hello could anyone help me
i have a transit 2.5 di swb semi hi on an x plate with 44k on the clock and i have got an oil leak. please excuse me as ill try to explain it the best i can. as your looking at the engine behind the airbox i can see some sort of gaurd around a pump, and it looks oily and is leaking down onto the exhaust, would it be engine oil or gearbox, any help would be ace.

sounds like tha lift pump? if it is then it'll be engine oil

Don't think gearbox oil

Do as crazyscoot says and also check your rocker cover gasket at the back with a cold engine have a careful look using a good torch and a mirror

Either way it doesn't sound major

Look at it by all means and judge the severity of the leak...if its only weeping a little . . leave it and top up regularly with quality engine oil ....this has the added benfit of not only feeding the engine fresh new oil regularly but puts you under the bonnet and in position to spot anything going wrong before it gets serious . . also as gravity pulls the leaking oil downwards the underside of the van gets a coating - albeit on one side - which on a Transit can't be a bad thing can it???

The downside is ..... the oils drips on the drive

my chassis should be rebuilding its self then the amount of only under it rear crank oilseal gone
still not long till 24v power

wow thanks for the response, i only found this link by accident and im glad i did. as for the underside it should be ok i bought the van when it was 18 monts old with 17k on it and the first thing i did was clean the underside of the whole van and undersealed it so hopefully it should be ok.

Born again biker myself the amount of oil that would weep from a leaking rockerbox gasket is negligible....would probably burn on the exhaust before it hit the ground anyway.

There'sno reason for diesel to be on the road unless theres been an accident...those guilty of spilling diesel on the public highway should have a finger amputated to serve as a constant reminder of the potential carnage that can be caused by carelessness.

Several times, in the last 24 years, I've seen bikers come to grief on diesel spilt by careless drivers leaving fuel caps off and roadwork gangs filling the powered rollers used to lay Tarmac

Also there seems to be a worrying trend by the utility companies, and others, to dig up the road and place a manhole cover in the middle of a corner or use excess amounts of tar overbanding - both absolutely leathal in wet weather - when finishing up.
