Setting up the fuel pump

Postby alandav123 » Sun Feb 21, 2010 7:46 pm

Hi all, my 1998 2.5 non turbo diesel needs help.

If the set screw that lives under the cap on top of the feul pump goes out of control and gets to the point where its impossible to "set it" correctly...is there a way to get it back into resonable order?

What I mean is...can I back off the lock nut and screw the set screw all the way in until it stops then back it off a certain number of turns OR screw it all the way out and then back in a certain number of turns?

I have made adjustments and sadly so did the guy changing the timing belt and now we are unsual of where it started.
More worryingly there is a horrible sharp ratteling from the fuel pump area that was not there before and also the van is not pulling at all and struggles to reach 45 mph.

Any constructive help appreciated.
regards alan

Firstly, recheck the timing

What's happening as far as smoke from the exhaust :?:

hi there, had a new belt fitted recently. Its nopt smokey at the back but I am assuming that the amount of fuel its getting is low as she is as weak as water.
I turned back the feul set screw as it failed its MOT due to too much exhaust fumes, thats what started this off.

For all I know the ratteley noise has nothing to do with the fuel pump set screw at all, but when two things happen around the same time you just lump them in together.

I was hoping for a fool proof method of getting it set at around the right spot or does it just keep going in and out until it drops off?

To be honest I would not know how to check the timing without looking into it in a book/net etc.

Thanks for your input
