Black Smoke

Postby fred c dobbs » Fri May 26, 2006 9:43 pm

My 1993, 97000 mls 190d has always been a bit whispy but recentely although newly mot'd, I have embarrasing bouts of black smoke. Between upshifts and flooring the throttle it puffs out small clouds of black reek. Otherwise it starts and pulls well. Regularly serviced and topped up with derv additives. Any help appreciated.

Pristine as it has just been replaced. For the smoke test at the new computerised mot I reduced the throttle travel and spiked the derv with additive.

Have you checked the EGR.,exhaust gas recirculater, if it is defect will also cause black smoke when shifting.

black smoke

Disconnected EGR and definite drop in smoke under load. Just need to try the acetone shot followed by a couple of jars of veg oil.
