rear axle on c reg transit

Postby tom_moran » Wed Feb 24, 2010 5:08 pm

hi all

im here to ask the experts! a friend has asked me to replace the rear axle on her c reg transit. now ive never worked on a transit before and before i go over and realise ive not got the right tools etc, i want to get it right first time basically.

ok first question is are the bolts to be used stretch bolts? as i know on some makes they are. im going to need to replace the diff oil but what oil and how much of it? and bleed the brakes up etc. anything else ill need to know? is there any tricks to doing these?

thanks in advance guys

If it was type 34 (square section, used on the MK3 too) with diff problems, then just change the diff, very easy. You could even find a better ratio, but remember the speedo pinion gear for the speedo.

If there are 5 wheel studs it should have the easy to replace front loading diff, if it has 6 wheel studs an axle swap is easier

thankyou! Thats helped enormously. Hopefully this will be the last question, can a jack the van up on the diff? As im struggling to find places strong enough to jack it up and put axle stands under it. I dont want to bend the chassis as thats game over

i cant thankyou enough guys, i really cant. I got the spare diff ready to go in, the old diff still in place but completely disconnected and draining over night. Only thing ive left to do tomorrow is to work out a way to get the fill plug out as it mashed to bits and like every other bolt ive undone today was so coated in 20 years of rubbish ive literally had to hack away to find them then spend 2 hours with a wire brush and cleaner before they were in a fit state to be undone!

Ill drop back tomorrow with the result as i know its nice to hear the end to things.

On another note, if anybody ever needs advice or help on a vauxhall you can find me at mk3oc.com with the same username as hear and ill be happy to help in anyway i can
