Whats my van worth?

Postby 62mph » Sun Feb 28, 2010 9:48 pm

Hi Guys

Thinking of selling my Transit Van for a newer model - I love the van but for the amount of time I spend in the van - about 400 miles a week - It would be nice to be in a newer van..

In my opinion, I think this van is worth around £1600ish, and I would be greatful of other valuations

Please not the van is not for sale - need to see what sort of money its worth then I can decide if its worth selling or scrapping
( )

Van desciption..

1998 S Reg Ford Transit 120
[*] 108,500 miles
[*] Averages 33mpg
[*] Re-sprayed Mercedes white Feb 2008 (By a professional)
[*] All new wheel arches Feb 2008 (By the same professional)
[*] New cam belt at 107,000 miles
[*] New cam belt at 107,000 miles
[*] 3 new tyres November 2009
[*] Oil filter, fuel filter and air filters changed every year
[*] Engine flushed and complete oil change every 10,000 miles
[*] Seats and cab in good condition
[*] Wood boarded floor in the back with one shelf

I got this van in August 2007 for Speedway racing since then I started my own landscaping company in January 2008 and since then has been used for both. This van has been well looked after, gets washed every Sunday and polished every 6 weeks! It has never missed a beat and in December 2009 carried me and other half on our week long mini tour of Europe through France, Switzerland, Germany, Luxembourg, and Belgium! There is no smoke from the exhaust and does not burn oil. In fact before our tour I filled the oil the maximum, checked it when we got back at it was still at the maximum after 1500 miles in a week.

In time when I've had the van, it has failed both MOTs, both times on rusted brake hoses - Other than that it has passed no worries

Please see picture below, can get more if it helps!

Please note since this photo was taken then windscreen seal has been replaced

Most would say last of the best?... but depends on how much newer you want to go... I'll say how I think a lot of people think, most people will see 1600 quid for an old 's' reg van poor (although it's worth it!) as for similar money they can buy a x/y/51 plate mk6, only to discover it's got a load of problems.. don't fall into the same trap!

I agree dont get a newer plastic heap  stay with the old faithful.

Ive driven the newer van upto the 58 reg and belive it or not i could wait to get back to my

old rust bucket.

yes there slower and louder but there a lot more forgiving than the new plastic ones.

And as you've had the hard work done to make it look nice i would stick with it and

i think you will find it hard to get £1600

If you were lucky I reckon you would get around a grand for it on a popular online auction site :(

I think you'd be very lucky to get £1600 for it, not sure if it will help but I've just bought a SWB med roof TD on a W plate with 140,000 miles and full service history upto 128,000 a little bit of rust starting on the rear doors and front arches and a few little dents but I only paid £770 for it

I would say keep it, if it's been so good over the last few years why get rid of it and end up with a mk6 with a load of problems?

Keep it !!! you will never get much for it as it's an older van... keep it and enjoy cheap motoring, especially as it's such a clean looking van.. :D

I could pick up a MK6 T350 LWB HR on a 2002/03 plate for £1600 or less with lower mileage.

Realistically, I reckon somewhere in the £700-£800 region if it's as clean as it looks.

gb biker you can pick up a mk6 for a grand but it will have a load of problems..mk6 need proper maintenance and on time as the engines are not as forgiving as a Di...keep the mk5 till its to rusty but spend a decent amount on a mk6 and you will be ok..just see KHTOWINGS van he has had lots of problems on his as it had been negleted.

I would keep it, it looks clean & respectable, and will probably outlast quite a few MK6's

I hear what you're saying about keeping it, but...

The milage is always getting hire..
The rust will come through at some point..
Its slow..
Its noisey..
Its not big enough..
And I would rather sell before its worth no more than £100!

Arrrghhh - Dilema time :?

Could you not get over the size issue by having a trailer?

A replacement, lower mileage, higher BHP engine or turbo conversion, will be a lot cheaper than a new van. Even a Ford recon engine will be cheaper.

Add an extra layer of sound proofing to the bulkhead on both sides and lay a Tourneo carpet over the cab mat to drastically reduce the noise.

Rust can be dealt with. New steel can be protected sufficiently so that the tin worm cannot bite.
