Side pipe?

Considering putting a side pipe out infront of the rear wheel on my high cube, i know its not a V8 and its likely just to be loud and not a particularly sweet noise but it could look alright. Anyway the thing that concerns me is with the high diff the vans not particularly good on fuel anyway but when the exhaust was blown before at the downpipe the mpg went through the roof, but i think with this idea there are two silencers in the system and it would just be the rear one i would be removing so would this still have a big effect on the mpg?

The two silencers should be far enough forward to fit a side exit tailpipe without losing the rearward one.

IIRC, you can fit an LDV Convoy silencer and tailpipe, they are side exit with only one silencer. You will need to modify the hangers though and you may also need to shorten the distance between the silencers

I have changed the exhaust on my longcube to a side exit one. All you need to do is move the rear hanger, then just change the rear section of exhaust for a side exit one, you can get a proper transit one easily. Job done.

On a transit I used to have I fitted a 2.0L mondeo stainless back box. It had a 4" exit and came out of the drivers side in front of the back wheel. The van I fitted it to was a lwb 2.5 mk3 and I only removed the tail pipe which was about 8 feet long and welded thid to the back of the middle box. I alse had to make a hanger for it.

It didnt make any difference to the sound, speed or the mpg that was that noticeable.

It was an easy fit as the mondeo box already had a bend in the pipe to fit the car and this lined up with the vans original spot on.

Get yourself some scrap exhaust sections, a mig welder and be a little creative, you can probably get some thing like this...



Took a couple of hours on a Saturday morning, sounds the nuts even on a 2.5Di. Fancy tailpipes are just slash-cut stainless tube on empty oval expansion boxes, had to lose the smaller original Ford muffler box to get it all to line up nicely.
