Which gearbox do I have?

MK5 luton non-turbo, reg T197 UBA.
I expect it's an MT75 but how do I tell if close or wide ratio? Haynes Manual refers to both.
I wish to order a 2nd hand box as mine is sloppy, a little stiff and occassionally crunches slightly. and don't want to order the wrong one. I guess with my heavy loads the wide ratio would be the correct one(?) Certainly need low gears on hills with only 168nm to pull 3.5t and over!

Also, anyone recommend suppliers? Thinking of Transitparts uk who have 25000 positive feedbacks on Ebay.

I doubt it will be close ratio though on a Luton, or a LWB for that matter

it will be a wide ratio you have - more pull in lower gears but same at the top

How do I ensure the replacement is wide ratio then? Will there be a part no. on it or something I need to identify. Haynes Man. just says the two types, doesn't give part nos. or anything.

Ok. Are you a breaker or something? I'm looking for a good wide ratio. Mine is 169k and I think mostly was used for town driving so is quite tired.
Do you test them? How much would you want to send one to B'ham?

Does anyone know how I can identify a replacement gearbox for sale as being WIDE RATIO? Does it say on it, or is there a part number or something?
I don't trust breakers to tell the truth: "yes mate it cam out of a LWB 3.5 tonner" for example. I was sold a dud for a previous van a couple of years ago.

Nobody know the answer to this? Just poke to the supposedly reknowned Transit Centre in Dudley who insist only the axle ratio varies but the Haynes Manual says there are two types and my VIN plate says W8 which is wide ratio. There's nearly 10% lower gearing on 3rd which is exactly what's needed when trying to get up a steep M-way with someone's house in the back.
Somebody here must know if it's written on the gearbox?

If you want to check the ratio of the 'box you are buying, put a piece of tape on the input shaft and another on the output flange. Put the gearbox in first gear and count the number of turns on the input shaft for one rev of the flange. This will give you the ratio of first gear and you can check with the manual.

Thanks but can you put a gearbox with no gearstick in 1st gear? I've never seen a second hand box that still had the stick on it.

Use a big pair of mole grips if there is no stick bolted on.
