limp home mode

Postby soozypoo » Sat Mar 20, 2010 8:23 pm

This van has been nothing but the bane of my existance since buying it hahahah, replacement engine, egr valve,3 dam epic pump/systems as it just would never set up correctly.

The latest one seemed to work ok and at least emissions were good 2 get it through mot,but i still have the limp home mode problem,
i no longer need the van and am thinking of selling it,but i cant sell it the way it is (can i??? heheheh)

The van is ok on starting, once the engine starts to warm up and i let the revs off the engine lamp comes on and it goes into limp home mode,i can bypass this by quickly turning power off and restarting engine, that solves it in the short term (have been doing this the past year or so) but need to get it fixed once and for all,i have rang a diesel specialist who work with epic systems to ask if it could be turned off and they said it cant,

ive read lots into it and it could be a whole range of things that r out of sync and causing it to happen from slight fluctuations in power to what ive read with throttle position sensors and so on,on this forum,im thinking it gonna end up costing a fortune to get this problem properly diagnosed and corrected, just to be able 2 sell the dam thing,it wouldnt be fair to sell it without warning the person, but if i did then obviously they aint gonna be interested in buying it,so have little choice but to sort the problem.

I dont know if to get the cambelt changed,i read on here that accounts for 60% of the problems with limp home mode,it was done when the engine was replaced around dec 08/jan 09,although i must have only covered around 20k miles since then,i thought this would be the cheapest option first

Any further advice from you guys on what to do next,i did get codes read a fair while back but im told unless the original problem is sorted the codes cant be turned off and the problem remains.
Is it trial and error going through replacing part by part again until it works lol?

Hi, soozypoo
Just wondering what model do you have, because I have 2005 diesel 350 135 ps. And I have the same problem, when going on motorway keeps going in to limp mode. Taken it in to ford 4 times at £50 a shot, and they say its not registering the code at ECU. And I am very p--------- OFF. Its a 12000 pound van.
I have now purchased a scanner and intend to look into it myself and I have a feeling it could be an injector playing up, as most of these vans do. Any way was wondering if you could point me to the diagnostic socket and which lead I require to connect to my OBD" scanner.
Good Luck

Why dont you just do the Bosch pump conversion? It does awat with all the sensors and the dreaded lucas epic system, i had the same probs as you and since i done the conversion it has been fine.

been to get the van diagnostic done 2day it came up with various codes they were 0110 0112 0113 all were air temp sensors and an egr code which they told me always comes up,but the main one was 1178 which was the timing.

The air temp things cleared off after a while and the only one left was the 1178 which im told is the pump to engine timing
apparently i need to get the timing belt reset and the pump is out by +4 degrees.

as i dont wanna throw any more money at the thing they suggested i get my mechanic to tweak around with the pump and adjust the angle on it and then it will be a case of trial and error and just drive around the block to see if the engine light comes on still.
as i cant keep going back and paying 47 quid to get a test each time hahahah

do you think it should be an easy enough fix ive had enough n want rid of the dam thing now i swear its number plate shud read 666 :D with its smiley front argggggggggh.
