Auto coversion. Whats involved???

Recently bought 99 mk5 120 swb and wondered apart from the obvious box, prop, pedalbox, maybe starter etc whats involved? Are there any electonics on the later autoboxes and is it going to upset things if i add a turbo to ofset the power loses without ecu etc.

the mk5 autos are all 85PS turbos and are controlled by the ecu.

If you can find an autobox from a mk3/4 diesel and the torque converter, propshaft, speedo cable, early mk5 speedo assy etc etc it shouldnt be too hard to swap

Thanks, were the mk3/4 all non turbo as i'm wondering if they could take the increased power if i add a turbo. Like your Traveller, i've got a 68 van that i need to restore. Cheers

You would really want a A4LD (4 speed) autobox rather than a C3 (3 speed) used in the MK3, as for power, they fitted both boxes to the V6's including the Cosworth, so no problem there.

Makes a change from the usual wanting to go from auto to manual box

I dont think it would be a hard conversion... be a whole lot easier with a donor

I think the hardest part would be finding a selector, as they're no longer available and the last listed price was £600 odd

The engine will have enough power, but you must take into account that it will feel so smooth, that you actually expect it to go faster, but it won't

If you do convert, try a 0-30 and a 0-50mph before and after the conversion

Anyone out there with a cheap swb mk4 automatic donor van???? or maybe someone wants to convert to manual mt75??? I'd do all the work and my vans only done 88k. Cheers Matt
