Mk3 Twin Wheel Rear Hub Nut Torque?

Just putting back together my 1989 Mk3 twin wheel G type axle rear hubs, having replaced leaking brake cylinders and contaminated shoes. Had to remove hubs with drums, as drums would not come off on their own. Easy job so far though - all came apart very easily.

When I get to refitting the hub nuts, my Haynes manual says "Tighten the nut to the specified torque setting and then loosen it off half a turn." This is fine, except they don't give you an obvious "hub nut" torque. In the list of torque values at the start of the chapter, the closest description I can find is "Bearing cap to axle case" at 73 to 87 lbft? This doesn't sound quite right to me. They give a hub nut torque for F and H type axles (148 to 177 lbft), but only a Hub locknut value (52 to 59 lbft) for the G type axle??

Can anyone help me out here? All I need to know is the magical starting hub nut torque figure, from which I back it off half a turn. Any ideas? Many thanks.

Anyone out there have any advice? I have searched at length and not found the answer elsewhere on the forum, yet I thought this must be a very common job.

I've heard that one technique is to tighten up the hub nut as far as it will go, then back it off until there is a tiny amount of play in the bearings, then tighten the hub locknut which in the process will pinch up the hub nut and remove the tiny amount of play you left. Does this sound right?

Any advice / comment much appreciated.

No idea if it's right but that how i do it on the twin wheelers, did tens of thousands of miles in my 2 recovery trucks with no problem afterwards
