Automatic help please

Postby StuartB58 » Wed Mar 24, 2010 2:57 pm

Can anyone help me with my auto box on a 1999 2.5td. Is there a dip stick to check the oil level? if so where's it at? The problem with it is very slow to select gears from standing, will it be the oil level? Is there a Filter I could change? How much oil would it take to change the oil in the box? The box was overhauled 25,000 miles ago so I don't think it will be a major problem!
Thanks in advance for any help,

Stuart.

HI, i was in your position a short while ago not knowing my ar$$e from my elbow with it either but thanks to the folks on here i'm slowly understanding bits of it.

Under the bonnet on the left of the enginge you should have two dipsticks with yellow handles on the one closest to the bulkhead is the one for the gearbox, in fact if you look carefully you should be able to follow the path of the tubes, one to the engine and the other to the box.
To check the oil drive it around untill normal operating temp is reached, when you get home select each of the gears in turn pausing for a few seconds in each, do this three times ending in park then pull the dipstick and check the level with the engine still running.

It will do the box a world of favours if you change the filter along with as much oil as comes out when removing the sump.

If you do some searches on this site you wil find out most answers to your questions, Andyg is the guru on here and is at the moment walking me through the salvage operation that is my gearbox !

Thanks for the reply/info. A few years back I had a Granada with auto box problems, I took the sump off, cleaned a metal type filter inside the box with petrol and put fresh oil in and it helped alot.
I looked for the dip stick last night but it was getting dark so must have over looked it, I'll look in the day light and see how the oil is.

Forgot to confirm that yes there is a filter to be changed or may be referred to as a screen in some places.
I can't remeber how much fluid you need to buy but it isn't the whole capacity stated in the manuals as you can't drain the torque converter.
