running on oil

Postby Iron_Dingo » Wed Mar 24, 2010 11:23 pm

Problem: Engine runs on when key is switched off, using lots of oil (3 liters in 500km). engine occasionally continues to race after throttle is released. I found oil on the boost side tube near the intake plenum. Could this be a leaky oil seal in turbo?

I have 98 Turbo Diesel 2.5 It has the Lucas Epic injector pump. Here are the symptoms: Engine does not turn off when key is switched off but when key switched back on engine shuts off immediately. Engine smokes A LOT when revved over 3k rpm. Oil present in boost plenum. Oil consumption is very very little when vehicle is not "raced". I suspect a bad oil seal in the turbo and something else maybe with the injector pump or controls. I bought the stop plunger kit but as the pump is "sealed" with marking paint on the cover screws I am reluctant to "fondle" it unless I can be certain that is the problem.

its because your van is up side down , the epic pump was made for the european market and will not work right in the antipodes position

and we have heard all about you australian pump fondler's

i cant see it being a case of running on oil as it would race away to death from any rev range , whats the oil strainer in the rocker cover like is it possible its pulling through there at high revs with the crank case fumes ?!!is the air filter ok ? it could be so blocked as to make the turbo pull its air from crank case i suppose and pull oil in at high revs

i have similar problems turning off by key sometimes but think its dirt making the shut off valve stick ( 100 ps turbo but with bosch pump fitted ) as a quick clean down of solenoid puts it back to rights for months afterwards

My guess would be that the ECU is detecting a problem with the engine or pump and is shutting it down, just as you power it up :?

Mileage on this engine :?:
Sounds like the oil hasn't been changed or not correct for the engine

Stop solenoid plunger worn and the ECU is taking alternative action to shut down the engine

The engine has 196k and i have 2k since the last oil change. I used 15 50 diesel spec oil. Time to get a diagnostic from a ford dealer I guess.
