My new van

[Lightweight Nat]

This is my new Transit, it's a 2.5 diesel with a new (lucas) injector pump. doesn't smoke, not one bit, not on start up, not under hard acceleration or anything.



It's a J reg, and aside from scabby doors (soon to be replaced) and a bit of rot round the rear arches, it's in good nick, the rear floor is totally solid. It needs a rub down and repaint to get rid of the silly signwriting on it. I'm going for blue again, but with a silver roof to keep the heat down in the summer, and i'll probably do it by hand with gloss rollers.

It also needs one of the UJs doing on the back prop.

Can anyone tell me more about it, is it a mk3 or a mk4 for example?

I'm planning on fitting a towbar, I'll probably get a second hand one. Will one from a slightly later smiley front swb transit fit? Where's the best place to get a new key from? Is it easy to swap the door lock and mechanism over? As i'm fitting different doors, but currently the ignition key does all the doors so i'd like to keep that for simplicity.

Welcome to MK3 land

locks are pretty easy to replace, but expect grazed knuckles best bet is to try a scrappies first but make sure if you find a complete set they are in good nick, otherwise it's down to the dealers £££££

there's nowt wrong with the locks themselves, it's just the doors they are attatched to are really scabby, and theres some on a scrapper in a mates yard that I can have, but i'll need to change the locks over to the new (to me) doors so I can use my current ignition key to unlock them.

Is there anything good about it being a Transit Bonus as opposed to just a Transit, other than the go-faster stripes? (Which I wont be retaining when i repaint)

as for towbar 86-00 all same have a read of trickys guide in the how too section!!!

later door locks are slightly different but can fit early models by being ground of with an angle grinder but you do need the plastic fittings that are on the end for the push and pull stangs.

Yeah, I'd kind of guessed that the full extent of the 'Bonus' features didn't go much beyond those gay stripes

Nothing a bit of wet'n'dry and a gloss roller wont sort

The van i'm pinching the doors from is a very similar age so hopefully there wont be tooo many issues with swapping the locks. And good news about the towbar, I might get one from a more recent van as it might be in better nick if they fit all the way up to 2000.
