Help with belts please

Hello all.

I am attempting to change 2 belts in the morning on 96 190 LWB 2.5D. They are the belts at the front of the engine. I believe they are the power steering and alternator belts. Thing is there is a load of squealing on start up, lasts about a minute or so. I have the replacements and I have searched for a thread on how to change them but cannot find a guide.
Can anybody help please??
Not sure what I am doing yet. Can I wreck the engine if done wrong??
It is going to be a trial and error job however I need the van for work and don't want to make a bad error.

Is the squealing not just fan belt tension or am I talking trash here?

I think it is something like that. Previous posts suggest that its the alternator belt which squeals on start up. Belts are looking a little tired though so time to change and tension. Just haven't really got a clue what or how to do!!

Fan belt runs from alternator to the fan. Slacken off the bolt holding the alternator and nudge/ lever it to slacken the belt. Remove belt- it'll lift off- and replace with new one. Lever alt. back and hld the tension on the belt then tweak up the bolts for the alternator. Dont do it massively tight, allow a small amount of play on the belt if you wiggle it up n down.

Never done one but I would imagine it's the same idea really. Should be pretty self explanatory once you have a good look at it mate.

thanks again mate. I thought the same myself. Best way to learn is to do it. Just wasn't sure if I could screw the engine up if I did it wrong or too tight/loose. Ah well of for a play with the old beast.

After all that, the penis from the motor factor shop sold me the wrong feckin belts... What an arse!!! Ah well a wasted morning and a trip back to the shop. Good thing I checked the sizes first before removing anything!!! A lesson learnt

You aint in Stoke are you? The cheapest place round here is bad for that. You take something back and they say " it's the wrong box".
Same excuse every time.

you need to take the power steering belt off 1st to get the alt drive belt off in the 1st place so while that off replace it if it needs doing
did mine last week wish i saw that photo 1st(better than the haynes one) would have been easier oh and to save grief if you can remove that bloody fan,it dont half get in the way

Well I went all the way on mine, because I just kept snapping things that were in a way

The power steering belt is easy, you'll see the adjusting bolt (13 if I remember it right) and the belt slides out easily. One thing - if you are not removing the front of your van (ehm...) - you might find it easier to work on it from underneath. The mounting bolt on alternator is easier to reach from down there too. The swearing is also less loud from underneath...
