underslung spare wheel

Postby dcurzon » Mon Jun 12, 2006 7:31 pm

i've got no way of getting it removed, i'd prefer to have it in the back rather than underneath anyway.

Anyone in Cheshunt with the tool for undoing these things?? or is there an alternative method??

ta :)

Depends which model Transit it is for which tool you use. Smileys use the jack handle through the rear panel above the bumper and the earlier ones use whatever sized socket you need through the floor from the inside. Both can sieze up, the cable drop version can be cut off and the bar clamp version can be removed.

ah, its a mark 5, but i dont have the jack handle. or the jack. so i'm pretty screwed if i get a puncture! :D

how deep is the bit that the jack handle needs to undo? wonder if i can get a 19mm socket down there

From the back to the unit is around 15 inches or so, you have to push when you are doing it so you might be able to get a socket on a long extension bar to do it but the clearence with the bumper is not the same size as even with a 3/8th socket so you 'may' get the socket in but you also stand a very good chance of dropping the socket into the wheel, find someone with a Ford jack complete. I don't know what size the socket needs to be probably a 14mm knowing Fords but it isn't a 19mm.
This is the only time I have ever had to use the Ford item as my older Transits all had the clamp bar arrangement...much better and I would never use the Ford jack on a Transit as I simply do not trust it, so this is why I carry a trolley jack.

It's not the same shape as a nut but you may be able to jam a socket on it.

it's an internal square - about three quarter drive sort of size - I can't measure mine the one on my old van because I sold it yesterday (bad luck  )

have you not got the tools with yours then? - the drive is on the end of the jack handle - have a look at the jack and measure the square hole in the drive on that

I use a "fit anything including Knackered nuts" socket on a long bar. The socket is full of spring-loaded pins and will adapt to just about any shape of nut. I gave a fiver for it at an autojumble a while ago and it has proved a lifesaver. I have the added complication of a beavertail on the back of my trannie so its a lay-on-the-floor job to get the spare out!

I bought a new handle from Fords two weeks ago for £20. Fords only use one type of handle/winder bar for the smiley shape vans, as it only shows one handle on their Microcat system for the whole of the smiley range from when they first built the mk5 right up until the new mk6 came out.

The carrier on my 1997 "P" had the nut rounded off ny previous owner, so got a replacement of an "X" reg at my local breakers yard. Only difference between them was that the newer carriers don't utilise the hook arrangement to secure the clamp anymore (Ford deleted this arrangement because of improper raising of the wheel, sfaety reasons etc). The size of the nut on both carriers is 15mm (same on the handle), parts man at Fords said that this was the only size of nut used on all the smiley mk5 carriers.

At £20 i thought it was a bargain as it saves space in the back and stops my stock getting damaged as the wheel had to be stood up and kept falling back and forth as i drove, therefore crushing my stock.

I had that problem a while back..when i got a flat,it was only then i found out i didnt have a jack or handle or anything

If i remember rightly i think a 15mm socket with extension bars aided by a slight tap with a hammer and the nut will undo the wheel :)
Cheers Mike
