Expert help needed please!

Postby tranvan » Sat May 01, 2010 12:54 pm

Hi
I have a smoking and starting problem with my 1998 T190 crewcab 135K.
Seemed to happen suddenly a few weekends ago shortly after filling up.
Symptoms are:

Excessive white/grey prehaps a little blue smoke on acceleration and idle.
Will only start when hot/warm. Can be started from cold if No.1 injector is bled while cranking over.

A local mechanic has reset the timing and injector timing and put a possible cause down
to inferior fuel after noticing that it was evaporating.
Engine doesn't use any oil or coolant.
Have replaced the fuel filter and filled up with fresh diesel and I'm running the van
hoping that the new fuel will circulate and reduce the smoking,if it is that.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply.
Not sure where the lift pump is and haven't looked at the injectors yet.

That's what the mechanic said but the garage receipt says diesel.
May have been a mix up in the garage fuel delivery.

Sounds like the fuel drain back problem I have with my new County. Just needs the time to trace the air leak.

Would the fuel drain back air leak show fuel leaking out?
I have fitted a new fuel filter as the water-in-fuel sensor light has been
showing intermittently in the dash for the past few years and still is.
With the van using no oil or coolant I'm hoping the smoke problem will be a fairly cheap fix.
Have been running the van around daily to see if smoke clears but it's still bellowing the smoke
on acceleration.
I may try replacing the lift pump if it's not too expensive.

Drain back wont show any leaks unless its at the inj leak offs. Dodgy lift pump might allow fuel to drain back, slight air weep in the feed pipes to lift pump possibly, most leaks after the lift pump will show fuel when running.

I am sorting this fault on my county by firstly changing all inj leak off pipes and doing the 'MOD'. Second would be to change the lift pump, if this doesnt work then improvised fuel feed and return to isolate the fuel tank.

Fingers crossed for you.

Thanks for the replies,definately helping!

Mechanic said draining fuel from the tank would be difficult so he suggested
filling up on top of the fuel already in there (quarter of a tank) and give it a good run.

What are the injection leak off pipes and the 'MOD'?
