Diff play

Postby simplyshaker » Thu May 20, 2010 9:09 pm

When holding the diff flange I can turn it back and forth, I find the play quite excessive. What sort of play should I find if any ?

I've found a differential for sale here in France for a decent price ( 50 euros and its marked as new, just waiting for him to tell me the ratio now), but I was wondering if changing the diff and not the halfshafts is not a good move. I haven't took the halfshafts out to inspect the splines for damage because I need the van. Is it a weak area and they are likely to be worn ?

I have a 'scraping' noise coming from the back when loaded (not costant but nearly) so I'm changing all that could be the cause. Diff, bearings and brake shoes while I'm there. So apart from the halfshafts thats pretty much everything.

Thanks for the help

Halfshafts dont really wear :)

With regards to play... on the input shaft 1-2mm is all there *should* be on the crownwheel the play should be barely perceptable. Just like the one im selling ;)

Thanks MM, I would have took yours but with this one being so cheap ( 50 euros ) I couldn't really let it go (Its the postage costs for a heavy thing like this that kills the price :( )

I'm pretty certain my diff is on the way out so changing it can't do any harm.

Mine has a lot more play than that. When I grip the propshaft It moves a fair few mm (the diff flange) and there is a little sort of gear crunch feel. I felt that through the flange when I had the propshaft off.

Hopefully this french chappy will get back to me soon.

Seams a lot ? Do you have any noise coming from it when the van is loaded ? (not 100% certain that is whats causing the noise on mine)

My Transit being an '89 diesel, up to what year diff can I use (plug and play, no messing around stuff)

Its a H type axle so thats the front bolt-on style diff ( but of course anyone who can answer this question would all ready know that  )

Am I limited up to '91 ?
