Hi everyone, had my transit for a couple of years now and use it for carting the kids and bikes down to the beach. Coach seats fitted as well lol. Anyway it normally runs on the O of Normal but over the last week has started running on the A or L when going up hills. The viscous fan is working, its not losing water but I know its running hot. Is the thermostat an all in unit or can i remove the two bolts and just take it out. Its a standard 1996 transit 85 by the way and has anyone had over 80 out of one of these on the flat

Yeah but its a bit to warm if you know what I mean. And thats without it being loaded up so has to get sorted

100mph but mines turbo'd if you tweak the pump on a 76ps you can get a easy 90mph diff is all that lets it down then thermostat can be removed easily enough just got to take top hose off then water pump pliers carefully on the big nut undo and it should just pull out 15 min job

well if it was at the 'o' and its now at the 'al' then i'd do a bit of further investigation

have a look at the water condition (when cold) is it brown? or does it have antifreeze? if its brown dump it and try flushing the rad out - disconnect top and bottom hoses and run a hose pipe in each one till the water flows out clear if the water is in good nick then it probly wont be that

same here!! my van is far more important than my poxy drive i just hook up the pressure washer to the water butt thats fed by a copper pipe from the kitchen sink

Thanks lads, checked the fan again working fine. Took the thermostat out dropped it in boiling water and a gap no bigger than a gnats c**k appeared so mes thinks its the problem. Prior to me reading this I took the two bolts that hold the thermostat housing out first doh lol. Get a new one in the morning, and maybe have a tinker with the pump ...

Our 96 Tranny (2.0 100) does 85 tops. Our 51 Tranny does about the same and thats a 100 280 2.0 TDI.
