Hi Guys,
I'm new to this forum and was after a little advice. My transit is a 1997 230 TD LWB but had a coachbuilt rear area which I have converted to a camper. I was travelling up to Alwick the day before yesterday, when the engine light came on and the van went into limp mode. I called the RAC out and they pluged it into the disgnostic in their van. The RAC man found it difficult to identify the exact problem but said that there was a fault saying injector position sensor and/or fuel pump. If you leave the van for around ten mins then start up again.... its fine but will only travel 4 or 5 miles until the light comes back on. There is no smoke and when the light is off there no problem at all runs great. I have taken it down to foed and they cant put it on thier diagnostic as they say its too old. Can anyone advise me to what they think the problem might be???

take epic pump off and go manual bosch pump.. this might help.

I have been told about this solution !! Don't you need to take a new feed for the bosch pump from the wippers and fit a new pedal with a throttle lead/cable??
I think I could manage the above but I'm not to clever with electrics. I beleive there is some bypassing needed to make this work!!!
The first thing I'm planning is too check the timming to see if this is the problem....

The first things to check with an EPIC pump are the timing belt, and the electrical connections on the back of the pump for corrosion or bent pins :wink:

There is a lot of information available here, on these pumps, if you are prepared to do a bit of diagnosis yourself

Swapping out the pump for a mechanical Bosch, before fully investigating the problem, is a bit like fitting a new engine because the one you have won't start! :shock:

Yes I agree with you, and this weekend I will be checking the timing!! I'm now finding it hard to find the right cam belt as most suppliers only list the belt for the 190's not the 230 TD do you know if they are the same ????

All Di and TDi engines from the same year/era will use the same belt, but the width has changed over the years :roll:

All you need to watch with the belts is that they went from 25mm to 28mm width, sometime in 1997, my van has the wider one and is a mid 1997 build

If you order the belt kit from a larger factor or a Ford dealer, then the reg number will get you the correct one, unless the engine has been changed

Hi guys
I have checked the timing and the 6mm drill bit will go into the hole on the pump pulley but it is very tight.... not a easy slip in and out the bit will go all the way in but it is then very hard to pull out! i had to use pliers to pull it back out

Is this enough to cause the fault on the pump and throw the van into limp mode

I ajusted the timing up and the dreaded light has stayed off and no limp mode

I was planing on changing the belt! But wanted to make sure the fault had gone!

Now after about 50-100 miles of use after checking and adjusting the timing limp mode returns :cry:

I have stripped her back down and checked the timing and it seams to be in the same place I had set it to!!

Any ideas on whether this still sounds like the timing or maybe it's time to look at the pump!!!

Get a new belt on before you do anything else, as your old belt may be throwing the timing off enough to upset the epic ecu

Agreed,

when the EPIC runs well it runs well. the only fault i had with mine was the plunger. soon had it stripped down (well Matt did) and the plunger repaired.

As a side note you can't swap to a bosch pump if you are running an automatic gearbox. the EPIC has timings for the box.
