SPARE TYRE ACCESS PROBLEM

Postby axzed » Wed Jul 05, 2006 1:06 pm

Hi. Sorry, I read the postings but still need help. I posted this query yonks ago, but never got a response.
95/lwb/htop/2.5D. I have a folding Ford jack handle DO1QA 94VB 7081-AA that offers a 3/4 inch square head inside of which is an octagonal socket- 15mm. I have restricted access/visual of the winder mechanism. I can't achieve a connection because ahead of the hole seems to be a 'hinged' keyhole shaped plate the top part akin to a large washer over the winder socket. The round hole it presents is too small to allow the jack handle entry. Help. PLEASE.
PS. Just how many cans of WD40 do I need to loosen my carb. slow running adjuster before it obliges my screwdriver & does the decent thing??
cheers

 Needed shades to read this one 8)

Does it sound like someone's fitted an anti theft device for the spare wheel :?: sounds like it :D

Try the carb screw at different temperatures and be careful not to snap it  :D

I agree about the spare, it may well have an anti theft device, can you take a pic of it so we know what we're looking at?

Slightly confused by the other bit though, you have a 2.5Di but you need to loosen the Carb  Eh????

Hi again & thanks.
Ooops. :  Fitted a FIP instead of 'carb.' & the spare fell off!! :D

Sorry, I aint assimilated the lexicon of D yet, still struggling with the silly bits.

I can hardly see the winder mechanism due to spare & 'beaver tail' (hey-getting better), so a piccy not possible.

I couldn't see how the plate could be locked & I tried to prise it away, -without success. I will try a bit harder now I assume not to be an original part.

As anyone else got the same thing fitted?
cheers

No, but a piccy of what you can see would be nice, as any "improvemnts/mods" and ideas are always welcome :D

The spare wheel mechanism is awkward to say the least it has a sort of collar around it like you see dogs wearing to stop them scratching their ears and you have to guide the jack into this and then PUSH it as it is spring loaded, lying under the van you should just be able to see whereabouts you are trying to get through the holes on the wheel, different wheels may make this even more awkward to see so then you are reduced to doing it by 'feel'. I have discovered that I need to grind the edges down on the lozenge shaped part as it will not go through the centre hole on an alloy wheel and it is tightish even with the steel, of course the plastic wingnut is no longer there but then when the wheel is up the mechanism locks so it doesn't need to be there anyhow and if someone has gone to the trouble of winding down my spare wheel they will have the wheel if a wingnut is present or not. I much preffered the older method of spare wheel holder attachment the only trouble was that over time the clamp would rust tight and bend when you tried getting the wheel down plus the bar if done up too tight will mark the tire.

Thanks. Still struggling.
Do I have the correct tool?
Is there a 15mm bolt head within the 'dog collar'?
If I push hard, should the hinged plates that presents a round plate with round hole covering the collar spring back? i have pushed hard & no result. Should i hammer the tool in to home it?
By 'lozenge', do u refer to the business end of the jack handle that i should grind down?
sorry to bang on about this
cheers

No do not hit it, it should be firm pressure,

The lozenge bit is the part the wheel actually sits on.

If yours is the same as the one pictured above then you are on your own as mine doesn't look like that.

You only need two tools in life: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.

WOW Valsheda, u r a star!!!!. THANKS for all your effort.
A picure is worth 1K of words & u nearly managed the whole dictionary.
Well, I just managed to take some pics. of mine afer levering the tyre
to a rakish angle, but they r now reduntant as u have the identical system & tool.
I am about to extrapulate if its allowed......................
Can I deduce that the pressure on the handle is suppsed to push the hinged & pertinantly sprung cover plate back past the nut & allow union?
If so, mine must be siezed as I went for the 2lb hammer blow option!
We both have a off centre 'bolt' through the 'lozenge' holes & it would also require this to be removed prior to actually fully freeing the spare.
Any idea what I can expect to overcome on the hidden side of this 'bolt'?
Could it be a magic lock forged in a lost cave in Transitvania by invisible flesh eating dwarves who require constipated rocking horse turds on a bed of fairy droppings with a dodo boiled in its own fear?

access to spare wheel

Postby o6boo » Fri Jul 07, 2006 4:57 pm

I`ve just fabricated a handle to release my spare wheel, copied from an instrument exactly like the one in your pictures.Push the octagonal end onto the octagonal head of the wheel release, then rotate. The "push" frees the lever, the rotation lowers the carrier. you may need to apply some weight to the carrier to unclip it from the lever.( made mine from a piece of 20 x20 RHS welded to a length of 12mm dia. bar.) hope this helps
