Starter motor or ring gear ?

Starter motor doesn't engage the flywheel for more than a split second then just spins freely If I keep trying it will eventually catch enough to start the engine
Water/wetness was well spotted by 100ps_drw_hicube on top of the starter motor and looks like the condensation from the aircon Could this be the problem

Has any one taken apart/cleaned one of these little starter motors Could it have gone rusty inside

my dad took his little starter apart cleaned it all up put it back on worked excellent but after about 3 goes it started spinning again so he got a new one if /when you take starter off check ring gear for any damage hope this helps

If I don't think i've got a choice

Will take it off tommorow and if it doesn't look clever I'll have to get an exchange one

have a go mate you never know just be carefull of the poxy battery everytime i go near the starter i get a shock

It's only 12volts
I will be disconecting both batteries anyway

No it doesn't 'Cause if it is, the only help would be if you come round and take the transmission out for me so that I can change the ring gear

so the ring gear has gone hmmm well it is definately a 2 person job and a messy one too what ever you do dont leave it up on ramps you might find the van stolen

sounds like the starter at fault, its spinning but not shooting out to mesh with the ring gear

if you put power to it on the bench you can see whats happening, one of the terminals shoots the cog out the other will spin it, ive had them working perfect on the bench but wouldnt shoot out when fitted it could just need stripping and cleaning

Well it's out
The ring gear seams okay It's obviously got shiney edges where the motor was (trying) engaging

The motor looks good and lubed at the sliding pinion part so it must be in the windings of the throw out part of the starter motor
Now the hunt is on
Maybe an independant or possibly partco But just for fun I'll ring Fords

The gear-reduction type starter is about £100 from motor factors for a Valeo recon (keep away from R.E recons they are good about 30% of the time), I've only ever bought one Ford one and it was £165 at the time (6years or so ago).
