LPG diesel conversion.

Postby nevbag » Sat Sep 16, 2006 10:09 am

Hello all, advice needed. I own a 1996 Transit based motorhome (Herald Valencia). It's a 2.5 turbo diesel which I had chipped 3years ago (great improvement to torque), I am now considering an LPG conversion, has anyone out there had any experience of this on a Transit diesel? I fitted one myself to an old petrol Landrover sometime ago so I am looking at doing a DIY job again. My engine has only covered 25,000 miles from new. All advice appreciated.

:? you have one of my favorite motorhomes there ! personaly i wouldnt bother converting it as you dont do a great deal of miles ,also i am not shure if this can be done that well with your pump.the epic is a funny pump and if she is running well i would leave her alone!
the lpg gas /diesel thing hasnt taken off that much so i dont think its that good!,yes if you had a petrol then i would but diesel leave it alone! :) :)

The trouble is that although power is inceased by better combustion, it costs more to run. Therefore you wont get something for nothing. :(

Didn't I read somewhere on here that LPG on a diesel behaves more like nitrus in a petrol?

Yep, speeds up the burn, an additve not a replacement like on petrol.
IF and it's a big if, you don't use the extra power you will get better fuel consumption up to 20% but i only know one bloke with it, thats on an LDV with a pug engine

Diesel engines have been known to 'blow up' as the power increase is too much for them and I think this is the reason that there's not many people converting them.
That and your chipped engine together can only end in disaster  :!: :(

Out of curiosity, what chip company have you gone with :?:

Many thanks for the advice from you all. The reason I was considering the conversion was because I am looking to take early/semi retirement and plan on using it more so I had economy in mind. I am also concerned about improving exh. emissions in this current climate of eco friendly etc. Given the advice so far I might let this project lie on the back burner at least until more folk have tried and tested it.

The chip company I used was Van Aaken, very pleased with the result.

I have been very interested to read about potential problems with 'fly by by wire' and sticking pump pistons etc, is there anything else I should know about that might crop up with my beasty?

Thanks again,
Nevbag.

Another thought has just crossed my mind, is it worth fitting a s/h intercooler, anybody done this?

Yet another thought, ( I keep having em) is it worth removing viscous fan and fitting electric? What benefits if any?

Great site by the way, very humurous in places, better than watching telly.

i wouldn't bother with an electric fan mate. For the work involved I doubt you would see much difference. Diesels don't seem to produce that much heat when compared to petrol, though I see yours is a TDi. We had a NA Di and didn't notice most of the fins on the fan were missing till we had to change the engine!. Something must have come up from the road and hit it, but it never overheated an dlooke dlike the fins had been missing a while.

It upsets the delicate balance and parameters of the system and will not cruise :( :!:

As Fred said you may not see any benefit and have all the hassle of the electrics :!: :(

I rarely hear my viscous fan working and it's usually when stuck in very heavy traffic in very hot weather (with air con on to give the engine a bit more load )
