MK 7) hunting/surging at idle, lacking power, p0089

Postby jacko1611 » Sat Sep 18, 2010 2:02 pm

if your mk7 has any of those symptoms or cuts out/stalls at junctions or runs rough and sounds noisey chances are that the van requires a pcm recalibration/software update. this can only be done at fords or at a garage which has access to the ford diagnostic computer. after a recalibration a process called fuel pump learn needs to be carried out and then another called fuel pressure relief valve counter reset. the pressure relief valve is in the end of the fuel rail. this can sometimes activate and blow out, allowing fuel to escape the fuel rail and down the return line. this blows due to the fault in the pcm calibration, dosnt always. an easy way to tell is to pull the pipe from the end of the fuel rail (push in the red tab) start the van up and watch to see if fuel is running out the end of the rail as the van surges.

if u just replace the valve it will blow again without the pcm recalibration, pump learn and relief valve counter reset so a trip to fords is needed.

written up so i dont need to type this ever again! lol

Thanks to Jacko.
I had this done about 3 weeks ago after posting on this forum.
It drove like a different vehicle. I had an extra symtom though - mine wouldn't tick over if i started it to soon after switching off.

Sadly though all my original symtoms have returned this week. It going in to Ford tomoz for them to have a look at.
Do you have any suggestions as too why the symptoms have retruned?
Can the PCM update be done succesfully without the fuel pump learn & PRV counter reset being done?
I suspect the reason you posted the guide was to draw a line under repeating yourself again and again.
I'm just gutted as it has been driving brilliantly since the PCM and now I'm back to the original problem!

Ususally one hours labour, but I'm sure if you had it added to a service it would be cheaper

Would having a map done eliminate the need for this or would it be required before hand?

I have removed my pressure relieve valve and it is in several compnents. It does not look damaged its just not on one piece.Does this mean it needs replaced?

Thanks for the reply,

After putting it all back in I went for a drive, had to crank it a couple of times to get new fuel through.

Anyway its now not juddering when on idle.I dont quite understand why the problem had now gone away simply by taking the prv out and putting it back in.
