Ford Extended Warranty - worth the money?

Postby Vee4 » Mon Jul 26, 2010 3:47 pm

I almost hesitate to raise this subject again, as I'm sure there will be some strongly-voiced opinions!

When I bought the Mk5, I took out the extended warranty as the standard warranty at the time (1997) was only 20,000 miles or 12 months. The extension took it to 60,000 miles and 36 months. Of course, since it was a Mk5 and minimum specification (no fancy bits to go wrong), I never had to call on the warranty.

For the Mk7, if I act before 20,000 miles or 12 months, I can buy an extension for 3, 4, or 5 years with unlimited mileage. It is effectively an insurance policy with a one-off premium, payable in advance:

I think that by 'spark fluids' they meant 'spark plugs'. I wouldn't be too concerned about the spark plugs being excluded from the cover. The list of exclusions consists mostly of routine service items and 'fair wear and tear' items. I was thinking more of cover for major engine components (turbo, fuel pump, etc.), gearbox and chassis (axles, etc.). I have AA Relay cover anyway, and that covers me in any qualifying vehicle that I happen to be driving.

The standard warranty seems pretty poor, they will wriggle out of any responsibility if they can, I wouldn't bother personally. I am rather pi**ed off with Ford at the moment though

Have you had to make a claim and, if so, how did it work out?

I brought a 56 plate van in December and the warranty had just ran out but ford gave me a 3 month extended warranty with the van and during that time it had a new radiator a it's second egr valve! ( at 36000 old miles) it then ran out and I took out another extended warranty which cost me 400quid for a year and so far I have had another egr valve a new oil cooler, and some gearbox oil seal I haven't had to pay for any of this and I think it's been well worth the money and its also peace of mind the only think I have payed for is a new clutch which I had replaced when they replaced the oil seal and that cost me £170.

So is there a consensus that (assuming you are not able to carry out major repairs yourself, for whatever reason) the extended warranty is good insurance? If you take out a 5-year extension, Ford is prepared to guarantee major mechanical components for a total of 8 years. With my Mk5, they would have been on a safe bet, but with a Mk7 ...?

Lot of exclusions but there's a lot to go wrong on a mk7 so it's worth having especially if the injection pump suddenly becomes Donald ducked

I took mine out when the Mileage was on 99,500,it was approx 18 months old. (140ps Jumbo)
I've had a New Wheel bearing, also had a Crank renewed in the Gearbox, common fault on the 6 speeds once they get to around 130,000,all done under extended Warranty, although local dealer to me Subby the Gearbox work out,it took them nearly 3 months to finally get it sorted, everytime they put my Box back in it would leak,They ended up lending me a Gearbox out of their parts van for a month while they tried to sort mine out for about the 5th time and I stuck 10,000 miles on it.....!!!  .
But have to say it was worth having the Ford Protect Warranty, especially when it came to giving me another vehicle,I had a 10 plate Focus,Econetic SWB Transit (Dire Vehicle) a SWB Fiat Ducato....  .
But mine all back now and seems to be OK.
