Bad clunk/Bang From Rear

Postby Dan T » Tue Dec 19, 2006 6:38 pm

Hi all,

First time poster, long time viewer.

i've got a 2002 swb transit 2.0L. I have been getting a loud clunk/bang from the rear portion of the van, and when this happens my brake pedal then goes very soft for a short period after. i recently had my brake pads and shoes changed (last week) which seemed to fix the problem as my brake pedal was nice and firm again, but, yesterday the bang happened again and my brake pedal went worringly soft with a grinding noise on brake application.

Can anyone help ?

Thanks, Dan

Loud noises

Postby Dan T » Wed Dec 20, 2006 8:41 pm

hello again,

things came to a head today when one of the pins holding the brake shoe (nearside rear) pulled through the retainer cap, this in turn spun round and damaged the handbrake cable & adjuster, which locked the handbrake on. phoned the RAC who were out in 10 mins :D and gave me a temp fix untill they could get a recovery truck to uplift me.

Does anyone have any idea how this might have happened ? RAC man said he had never seen it before.

I hope when this is fixed it solves my bad noise problems.

I'd say it's probably something to do with the way the bloke did the brakes!

Cheers, thought it may have been a garage issue.

Spoke to the garage and they claim that it was nothing to do with them and landed me with a £163 bill, although, i'm not accepting liability and paying for somthing that they caused by incorrectly fitting the brake shoes.

Bad clunk/Bang From Rear

The Garage said they will take no responsibility for what happened and were not prepared to meet half the costs. They stated that if i pay the full Amount the work done will be under guarentee, but i questioned why last weeks work wasn't (replacement of brake shoes) ? they said it was, but as they only replaced the shoes there was no guarentee on the springs, pins and retainer caps. It all seems like a money saving decision by the garage which has cost me £163. They have agreed to allow me to pay parts only as long as i never take the van there again, i agreed but told them i'd rather give my money to a garage that i can trust to do the work correctly.

That sounds like a dodgy garage if ever I'd heard one!

do you have the van now? mabe if you could take off the drum and take a photo someone may be able to spot what they have done wrong :?

personally i'd take them to the small claims court to get your money back and if you have to pay again write "paid under protest" on the invoice :D

the pins dont pull through retainer caps for no reason if fitted correctly, the only pressure on them is from the spring, its either worn and shouldnt have been refitted or wasnt fitted correctly, either way its down to them

The work has been done and I need to pick it up tomorrow. They done the work but never talked money to me, the first i heard of it was when the phoned and left a message on my answer phone telling me the work was done and would cost £163. But ill be taking the wheel and drum off to inspect the work as soon as it's home. someone else told me to take them to a small claims tribuneral because there more likely to pay up before it goes to the tribuneral.

Good news

The garage agreed to pay all £163 after i confronted them when i went to pick the van up. I have also checked the work done this time to make sure its been done correctly.
