Well TBH my guess would be that it's something electronic/software related so they plug it in their computer and 2 minutes later it's sorted

get it in to the dealer. It must be some kind of issue with the computer in the van.

Unless you broke the key that is

Current Transit has a waterproof remote fob assemby, the battery is supposed to charge up when the engine is running.

Unfortunately there has been an identified production issue with them where by the connections on the battery are failing.

You won't have any problems getting a dealer to replace and program the fob under warranty, but make sure you take your spare key with you.

A glitch in the diagnostic software won't currently allow a new fob to be added unless all the keys have been erased.

If you want to test if the vehicle is seeing the remote signal, remove the front interior light.
look into the space behind the headlining and you'll see the remote signal reciever.
flick it off it's velcro mounting and pull it through the lamp hole.
open the unit up while it's still connected and press a button on the fob.

you should see a red LED come on with each button press. ;)

I'd go the warranty route if it were mine :D
