Postby judgemental » Fri Apr 13, 2007 12:47 pm

since trying to back it up an incline and the clutch started smoking a couple of weeks a go there is now a horrible smell - have I damaged the clutch?

A clutch that smokes is never healthy. However doesn't have to be fatal to the clutch. The smell comes together with the smoke. However if you still have the smell you probably did brake it. Better have it checked.

haven't used it since importing from Belgium nearly two weeks ago - as waiting for MPH speedo from Ford. DVLA refused to register it with KPH speedo.

So, smell is sill lingering, did drive to DVLA for inspection beginning of week and it seems to be OK?

But never had so much trouble getting used to a clutch - it is so easy to stall....

Why did you order it in Belgium if you don't mind me asking.

its a German built "Eura Mobil" and I saved more then 8k buying LHD

simply could not afford a UK supplied RHD - and as most of my holidays are in Europe there is really no problem with LHD.

a lot of Motor homers in the UK do this.

Ah, ok, makes sense specially with that price difference. Just strange the DVLA didn't except a speedo with km/h. Afterall it is your responsibility to stick to the speed limit and as you say most of your holidays are on the main land km/h would have suited you better.

When i was stuck with my 4x4 thing in deep sand, i sometimes have to burn of ditch the clutch a bit  .This also smells sometimes but it works.

After a few miles the smell is gone.
