mk6 transit "starting problem"

Postby jamiemk6 » Tue May 19, 2015 7:55 pm

Hi all! have been searching the site and havent been able to find anything definitive so thought id add to the rest ;)

My 85ps mk6 swb fwd transit is having starting problems from cold or when the van is left for a period of time (half hour plus)

Once started it runs like a champ with no smoking, chugging or missing it just takes a few attempts to start sometimes and under prolonged cranking will store p1563 and p1664 which i understand are related to the injection pump control module, if i crank for a few revolutions and then turn key off and try again it will catch and when i keep cranking will start and idle lovely.

Through research on this wonderful site i have narrowed it down to a few possible culprits.

Timing chain tensioner: not ruling it out but i definitely DO NOT have any cam chain rattles any time it starts (when i changed the oil for specified 5w30 it rattled its head off untill it had pressure at the tensioner (2-3 secs) so im aware of what this particular engine sounds like with a loose chain)

Air ingress: I have changed the fuel filter for a fram item (my father works at a motorfactors and got all the service parts at a good price) which i primed with valvoline system cleaner and it started first revolution after this, although i have read the ford ones seem more reliable. To be honest im a motorcycle techy so have not spent much time around diesel engines :S and would like some pointers on where to look for air ingress/how to test.

What i have noticed is a little "misting" around injector 4 (furthest from chain) no pooling but maybe air is getting in around here?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as it drives really nice for having 122,000 miles on it :) just dont want to lunch a starter motor.

Thanks in advance jamie.
