Engine cut out, won't restart.

Postby Fatboy63 » Wed Jun 17, 2015 7:31 pm

hi guys
Just looking for advice. Mk7 140 tdci rwd.
Was returning to UK via ferry from Santander this morning but 60 miles from Madrid the engine just cut out, no warning or alarms. Engine chanks over and there is sometimes an attempt to fire.
Got taken to ford dealer in a place called Tarracon who has checked the van on their computer, no errors or faults reported. They have replaced the fuel filter as a precaution as the fault does appear to be fuel related.
They now say it's the fuel pump?? This will cost close to 1000 euros by the finish.
My question to everyone is surely the diagnostics would report this error or at least low fuel pressure.
Anyone have any experience or knowledge to say if this the case.

The dealer hasn't checked it properly :-(
They need to check for leaks etc in the fuel system and for cam/crank synchronisation (which will not show up unless you go into live data afaik.)

You may have a broken wire somewhere.
It isn't impossible for the pump to fail but i would look at other things first especially if there are no fault codes.

I'd be trying a crank sensor long before a pump!

Thank you for your quick replies.
I am concerned about the diagnosis not just from the cost point of view, but I,m stranded in the middle of nowhere (all be it , my breakdown insurance has put us in nice hotel) I really would prefer to be on way home.
The garage are continuing with the investigation whilst they wait for the pump to come from Valencia? (Hard to understand why the capital of the country's not got one? But hey ho) which should arrive on Friday.
Hopefully they will identify the problem if it is something else. Not sure how they would react to me trying to tell them their job, especially with my limited Spanish ha ha.
It still seems strange to me how the engine cut out the way it did without any warning or clues, one minute motoring along at 65mph the next a completely dead engine. I was so lucky?? To be approaching a rest area on the motorway and could coast into it.

Hi guys
You were right! 2 days waiting for fuel pump to arrive. Fitted but guess what, same problem.
Have asked breakdown agency to ask garage to check crank sensor and wiring just in case they have not already done.
It may offend them but I really do not want to be stuck here until Monday if we can avoid it.

If any of you guys have pictures and wiring colours you could post for me in case out of frustration I have look for myself.

Thank you in advance.

Hi according to the garage no error codes are reported.

The latest development is they are saying the injectors are faulty. I'm expert by any means but cannot believe all 4 injectors suffered an instant failure.
Have had to tell RAC breakdown service that I do not trust that diagnosis and not to authorise replacement, they are clutching at straws at my expense. We are stuck now until Monday when I hope I can persuade the RAC to relocate it to a van specialist.
