After a complete engine rebuild/recon, we fitted a new BGA front seal. We didn't use the 'special tool' to centre the timing cover, we did it by eye, which was easy while the engine was on a bench. Long story short... it leaked like a b*stard once the engine was back in and running.
We assumed we'd not got the cover straight, so took it off again, used the proper tool to centre it, and fitted *another* new BGA seal. Leaked like a b*stard!!
The original seal hadn't been leaking before, so we put it back in to see what would happen. Yes you've guessed it, it's dry.
I don't know for sure, but I can only assume that the problem was poor BGA seals. The rear crankshaft seal (also BGA) does seem to be OK though.
Just sayin
