TDDI into TDCI?

Postby satanslittlehelper » Thu Jul 16, 2015 9:52 pm

Hi everyone, I've been looking at getting a Transit jumbo for a camper conversion,on a fairly limited budget.I,ve found a fairly low mileage clean 05 135 t350 with a knackered engine, but the vendor also has a 125 tddi (I thought he said 120 but must have said 125!)and will sell me both for what I think is a good price. Is this a stupid idea? I am in the trade but don't know the ins and outs of these transits,(apart from driving a few) and id appreciate any advice as to the problems I may have with this conversion. Also Is the 6 speed compatible with the tddi?
Thanks in advance :D

Welcome to the forum. :D

2005 Transit mk6 135ps TDCI with a blown engine.

Plan to fit a 125ps TDDI engine as a replacement. :?:

Both engine have different fuel systems, PCM's (Engine ECU), main engine bay wiring loom & Engine wiring sub loom.

Basically to fit 125ps TDDI engine. Your require PCM, Engine wiring sub loom & main engine bay loom.
All must be from a 2003 onwards mk6 :!:

Hi, Thanks for the reply, just noticed on another thread that there was a 120? If that's correct would that be ok to fit? thanks again. like the front end conversion by the way!

Thanks 8)

2.4 120ps is TDDI. Ideally as a straight swap. you require 2.4 TDCI. Unfortunately that's 135ps & not very easy to get hold of :(

As I said before you can fit TDDI but you'll have the change wiring looms & PCM as well to suit. As they are different between TDDI & TDCI

The 120 ps is the early version of the 125, which eventually became the 115

Using the 120 makes life difficult because it dates from around 2000-2002 so the loom etc won't match ups to the vans looms.

What's wrong with the 135?
It probably just wants injectors! Which would be a lot let hassle than an engine swap

Ideally I'd like to have the 135 back together but I think he said the cam carrier is broken, so maybe chain slip? This seemed to happen at 5 years old and 80 k as it's been sitting in bits since then. I'm worried that if I get another head, (or engine) there may be problems or damage to the other components (injectors ect)The 120 is a complete running van (but rusty) and I thought once the conversion was done it could be a reasonably reliable van, as you say the 135 isn't easy to come by, especially as I live in west Cornwall!
Am I just better off lookin for an engine for it? Also there is the budget to consider, as the more I spend on the van the less I have for the camper conversion! Has anyone on here done the tdci to tdci swap and found that maybe it's just not worth it? All you advice is greatly appreciated! :D

If you like the idea of simplicity, another option is to consider fitting the TDDI with a mechanical fuel pump. Guaranteed instant success with no electronics hassle. :D
The first Mk 6 mechanical TDDI, giving electronics the finger, since April 2013

Perfection is reached, not when there's nothing left to add, but when there's nothing left to remove.

Just throw the complete Tddi engine in, with the Tdci flywheel and clutch, (this way you get to keep the six speed gearbox). Sell the 135 bottom end, (got to be worth something to someone), sell the Bosch Vp Injection Pump off the Tddi, (more money back :D ). Fit the mechanical Injection Pump, see thread here;

The van will be as good as a 135 without the 'reliability issues' of either.
