Mk 6 gearbox

Postby stuart7364 » Mon May 07, 2007 7:54 pm

I have had the solenoid replaced on the fuel pump (£380), yesterday, on the way to Bodmin, the gearbox ceased to exist. No gears whatsoever. The linkages work to the box and I have had no syncromesh on third since purchase. It just lost the gearbox, any suggestions?

You've not given any details of what van you have! I'm guessing front wheel drive?

There is a post on here somewhere by Nighthawk explaining about a bolt that shears on the selector in the gearbox, try a search it's here somewhere.

I am wondering if it`s worth replacing the whole box. As I said, third is shagged and second is hard to select. The local gearbox people are quoting 500 bucks for a recon box. Is it worth cutting my losses?

Might not be that 3rd is shagged, could be that the selector was on it's way out for a while! Try a search, I don't think it's a hard job.

Have tried the search but to no avail. My contractors have offered a Con**ct for the duration and after a call to the mech, it seems that this is yet another mk6 standard prob. New gbox it is. Strange today to drive the car and hold the stick in to keep the gears (old habits). Just the MOT this month to deal with. Gutted about the box tho

this happened on my 2l td gearbox, the 10mm bolt inside the gearbox came loose/sheared and ended up in the bottom off the gearbox, it looks like it hit a few gearcogs on its way down as theres some nice grooves in it now : :P can anyone tell me if that would of caused damage to the cogs as from eye sight there isnt any

Nighthawk wrote:the selector mechanism fitted to the top of the VXT75 transaxle has a nasty little bolt in the bottom of the selector shaft.

It tends to work loose and fall out at the most inoppertune times leaving you stuck in gear with a lever that feels as slack as a d1*k in a bucket.

If your lucky you'll get it out with a magnet, if your unlucky the crown wheel within the transaxle will get it out for you by making a 1" hole in the front casing.
