Rear hub nut breaker bar help

Postby Rj777 » Sat Apr 10, 2021 2:08 pm

Hi,I've a 2007 mk7 2.2 fwd mwb and trying to change rear discs but the hub nuts are solid,I've broken two breaker bars trying to get them off both with hardened steel heads and a 5ft bar but as there swivel head the torque ripped them apart at the joint after, one went I even re enforced the next by welding the head but same result :/ does anyone know anywhere that sells a fixed angle solid breaker for a reasonable price ? BTW I've tried heating all that did was melt the nylock, and penetrating oil was the same and my 1600 NM impact wrench also had no effect :(

Last time i needed a really big nut undone I used a 3/4" drive set borrowed off a neighbour with a Landie, along with a piece of scaff pipe for extra leverage. It was only a cheap set but has the advantage of sheer bulk of metal.

Ford manual does not say.....

Suspect even once the nut is off the hub might be stuck on the spindle.

The rear hub nuts are handed on the rwd models so I would check before you go jumping up and down on a breaker bar! Antony

On the FWD they are not handed.

I had the same issue and used an american pro 3/4 " breaker bar, deep impact socket and a piece of box section bought from a fabricator for a fiver. 30 seconds later hey presto.

Did this job on mine last December. The nuts are handed as others have said. I bought a 1" drive 65mm socket, made a drive bar from 1" solid steel bar and slipped a piece of 42mm O/D tube 1500mm long over it, nuts came off easy.

I'm sorry, byt you're talking about the RWD which has 65mm nuts, they are indeed Left hand thread on the left side. The OP has a FWD, a totally different setup from the RWD.

Go to a Bus garage workshop back door and ask one of the lads to use their 1" drive air gun on it...

Use to have one in the garage I worked in for the water board vans and 7.5 ton lorries shifted anything no problem!
