Long time to start

Postby Leeb6833 » Wed Apr 14, 2021 6:48 pm

Hi all, my van is a 09 plate 2.2 fwd
It was smoking when I started it so I have changed all the glow plugs, before this the van started perfect just smoked,
I have now changed all the plugs and it still smokes on start up and it takes ages to start, the engine is spinning at a good speed it’s not slow,
Any help would be great I’m at a loss with it

When was the fuel filter last replaced..?? Have you had the codes read..??
Air ingrees into the low pressure side of the fuel system is a common "hard to start" problem. Check all the fuel lines to/from the filter head and the leak-back fittings/O-rings. Filter head itself can also crack letting air in.....this allows the fuel to siphon back to tank and takes an age to suck it back up again.

A little update I don’t seem to be getting any fuel through, iv taken the end of the leak off pipe on and cranked it and nothing really comes out, the clear thing on the top of the fuel filter is empty is that correct

Okay another update Iv manage to get it running, it still take a while to start I’m thinking it may be dragging some air in would this course this, on the plus side when it does start there is no smoke,

When doing your glow plugs did you have any fuel pipes or leak off pipes off for any reason as you may need to replace green Orings on leak off/back pipes, make sure your filter is pushed up and locked in place properly, also check clear/opaque fuel pipe from filter to pump , if its not secured properly it can rub on water hose or air intake pipe from air filter box to turbo ,see pictureImage

Thanks for the reply, I think iv sorted it, iv ended up changing the fuel filter, I never touched that when I did the plugs but if popped a new one on and it fires instantly now, so fingers crossed it’s all good
