Code reading and learns

Postby Scooby doo » Thu May 06, 2021 6:58 am

Right…
I’m going to bite the bullet and venture out into doing this..
I know it’s been asked before, told many times before..
I’m going to buy a second hand laptop, tho need to know what hardware and software to have on it, ie windows 7 or 10,
Iv seen lots of elm’s too, if someone recommends a good one that’s capable of doing my needs…
Is it a straightforward job to replace the prv and scv or do I need to do learns on these two as well?
Can’t order bits till next Friday on payday, but as the vans undriveable atm and can’t get it to someone and finding it hard to find someone decent to come out to me I’m going to learn to do this myself..
Again, if someone knows how to do these and have a day out in Wycombe then lots of beer tokens are waiting,
Absolutely miss having the girl running, and need to crack on with it next weekend…

Ordered me a dell laptop with windows 10 and the elm which you guys listed..
Should be here next week, so once here is it all plug and play or does the laptop need to register the elm?
Take this as learning for dummies, but together I’ll get there

Right, laptops here, downloaded forscan the free version, have that all ready, the elm lead is here too..
Going to start this tomorrow morning, is there any correct procedure to do this? Ie start van then run software, or plug in first then start van?
Simple question I know, but I is learning and we all have to learn somewhere, expecting a shopping list tomorrow and will post up my findings with you guys as you guys always know best…one day I’ll be at your level, one day lol

Have you put the drivers for the elm lead onto the laptop?

Very good point a relatively recent update to windoze removed the old driver for my elm so had to track down a new one and install it. Previously it was auto installed by windoze, but not anymore.

Winzip wont directly run the program. That is only to de-compress the files to make them useable. You need to “unzip” the folder (or extract it) to your desktop or suitable location then run it from there, not directly from the zipped folder.

Yeh that’s what it says on tunnelrat, tho, not being technically minded, or was 20 years ago, how do I unzip the file?
Device manager only has the yellow triangle with the elm plugged in, so know I need to unzip it just no idea how..
If you can tell me step by step for a 2 year old I’d be most grateful, this is all new and learning for me, and one day I’ll be able to teach someone else, maybe…lol
