Starting issue from cold and lack of power

Postby Mk6GBX » Sat May 08, 2021 1:14 pm

The van needs just a little easy start to get it running from cold. Quick spray down the intake and it will fire up with a little throttle. Once running for a few minutes it will start fine. I've went back to it at various intervals to see when it will/won't start. An hour seems to be it's limit before needing a little help. It's also lacking a fair bit of power, struggling to get to 60mph.

The previous owner has fitted a new filter and housing and it looks like the timing cover has been off. I don't think the fuel pump is original as it's a Vp44. I was under the impression that the 90 engines all had Vp30's?

Does this sound like a typical fuel pump issue or could it be injectors an air leak or even timing?

There was a thread recently where someone had trpuble starting from cold and it was the prv/scv (?) that needed replacing.

if it is a vp44 then someones changed it and theyd have to have changed timing gear, fuel pipes to injectors and engine wiring loom and recoded the ecu probably, its a bit of work. or they changed the whole engine. does the sticker on top of the turbo say 9024 or 12524

If it has been replaced with a higher output Tddi engine, then the issue could be with non-working glow plugs.
The 90ps can function without them, but the 125ps definitely does need them to be working :)

Few things to check there. Wouldn't think the lack of glow plugs would stop it firing up after an hour or so would it?

I'll get on it Monday at some point and update. I'll also double check the pump numbers and get the diagnostic machine on it

when its cold the heater plugs do help a lot on a 115/125, but itll still start after 10 or 20 seconds, so its unlikely. read the codes first.

I haven't cranked it as much as that as it sounds more fuel pressure related to me. Even from cold first thing in the morning if I give it a quick spray with the easy start it will start almost instantly

Mk6 TDDi doesn't have PRV/SCV.

I've attached a picture of the pump. You should be able to read all the numbers on there if you zoom in. Main number I make out to be is 0470504018. Turbo is 9024 which I'm assuming is the 90 version. Original engine code from the registration is either D2FA or D2FB

Apologies for the double post but I'm unable to edit my original now.

Had it on the scanner and it came up with the following

P0149 - Fuel timing error reported by fuel injection pump
P1564 - Fuel injection pump requesting reduced fueling mode
P1631 - Powertrain control module main relay

All cleared then I attempted to start it. I cranked it for longer than I have before and it eventually started by itself. It was roughly 15 seconds of cranking and had been over 24 hours since it last ran.

All three codes came back and after a short run P0404 - EGR valve position control performance or range fault, also popped up.

I'll take the timing cover off and check the timing. Hopefully that will solve the first two fault codes. I'll worry about the EGR valve at a later date. Any ideas on the main ECU relay code?

Going to take the timing cover off tomorrow and check the timing and the timing gear. How would I know if it's 90 timing gear over 115/125? I know they are thicker but having never swapped them what's the giveaway?

Does the Vp44 pump work with the 90ps timing chain/sprockets and injectors? Or would they have to have been replaced?

If the timing is OK can I simply code in a 115/125 ecu to get it to recognise the timing is OK or is it more complicated than that?
