Steering Angle Calibration Fails

Postby Stumble » Mon May 10, 2021 8:28 pm

So, for sometime now my 2008 FWD van suffers from occasional throttle delay on first pull away. For various reasons I havent been able to drive it much, so, its only recently I've realised, if it does the delay thing, its not until the steering is straight that the throttle comes back. So, it seems this could be an ESP thing
Anyway, so I attempted the Forscan Steering Calibration, but, it keeps failing.
So, I did ABS self test, passed
Steering Calibration still fails
So, I did ABS reset, passed
Steering Calibration still fails
I did Longitudinal Calibration, passed
Steering Angle still fails, with no DTC's
So, where to go from here ?
I am paticularly interested in LOOTS thoughts or anyone had similar
Thanks

(OK) [15:18:53.469] Calibrate Steering Angle Sensor has been started
(ERR) [15:19:10.842] Test aborted. Perform a self-test to identify any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs)

You may have a SAS "clock spring" issue.

I know your linking it to steering angle but to rule out the other common issues like this have you checked live data for fuel pressures? Demanded Vs actual?
Done a recent set of pump and pilot learns and counter reset?

SAS = Steering Angle Sensor....lives under the steering wheel....and is under the clockspring setup I believe.

Looks like this..:

Right, thanks
Genuine bloody expensive of course
Are they common failure ?, as may have to consider used replacement if thats what it is
But, I don't understand why this only seems to happen initailly when pulling away ????? :?

P.S., whats the replacement procedure ?

Not sure if your van has it but it may be something to do with the anti-stall feature.

Silly question time...Does your steering wheel normally point straight ahead..?? Have you had the tracking done lately..?? Steering rack replaced or repaired recently..??

SAS is not a common fail but not unheard of....they are a mechanical/electrical device after all.

Yes, steering wheel is straight ahead
No tracking not done, and no steering components - in my ownership
Do I need IDS to sort this ?
How easy is it to change the squib thing ?
Can I disable ESP and leave ABS working somehow ??
Thanks

IDS or Forscan should be able to do it.

Don't know if you can disable ESP whilst keeping ABS working as they are interelated...!?

I'll try again with Forscan,
So, is there a free version of IDS ?
