Ignition/steering lock removal.

Postby StuartB58 » Sun May 16, 2021 4:48 pm

Has anyone removed the Ignition/steering lock and is there any easy way to do it as mines had the bolts snapped off.

MK6 2.4td 2004 twin wheel minibus.

Thanks in advance

Sorry I forgot to add it's the barrel I need out.

They're "security" bolts and are supposed to be snapped off when originally fitted. They normally need to be drilled out.

If you take care a centre punch and hammer can be used to to turn them. The other way I have used in the past is to drill a hole in the middle and then use an easy out to turn them. They are not usually that tight, I would suggest a squirt of penetrating oil on the thread to make things a bit easier.

I think if you turn key (if you got key that is)to either 1st click or 2nd click and use a thin allen key you can get in and press button down and it should spring oot.... been long time since changed one of them so i could be wrong Image

The barrel is damaged so I can't get the key to go all the way in.

I've done it a couple of times, both using a very small cold chisel to tap the bolt "head" round anti-clockwise. They're not usually very tight, because they shear off when tightening, and once started can be turned out fairly easily :)
