Mk7 complete loss of electrics

Postby Robbiektm » Tue May 18, 2021 10:47 am

Twice now my van has lost all form of power from the battery. The battery is fine, first time it happened there was absolutely nothing, no lights anywhere ect. Almost as if the battery wasn't even fitted, went to put my tester over the battery terminals and a small spark and boom back to life like nothing happend. I've now had it a second time, for about 5 minutes with no power then it just came back on itself. Is this a common issue? I've tried looking for similar issues online however nothing. Any help appreciated.

You say the battery is fine. Has it been drop tested?

Thanks for the reply, no it hasn't, and I'm unfamiliar with the term. Is this something I can do at home?

Not unless you have the equipment. Most car spares places will have one or halfords can do it.

Alternatively you can buy yourself one.

It basically puts a load on the battery to see what voltage the battery can put out under load. It may help to see if the battery “gives up” when under high load or not.

I would suggest its most likely a slightly iffy connection - make sure all the terminals are tight on the battery(s?) itself and where it connects in to the adjacent fusebox etc

The earth lead attached to the front RH seat base fixing bolt, is also a connection worth checking :)

Thanks for all the replies guys, for peace of mind I may just change the battery as for the battery clamps they do look iffy. I have already replaced the ignition switch as that was play up, but even when they do play up they still allow me to unlock the van and see some lights. Whatever is wrong completely cuts out and power to the entire van.
