Mk6 2001 - Side door lock taking it apart worth it??

Postby ronandkate » Sun Jul 25, 2021 12:24 pm

Hello!

Side door not opening on central locking system (but with a heave will manually open with the black inside turning knob). It locks OK with the central locking but doesn't open again. Actuator seems OK (it cycles). Took off the lock and it seems to need more pressure to open it when central locking is on than the actuator can apply. What''s wrong with it? It's a riveted unit could be drilled out. Has anyone taken one of these apart to see what fails? Is it repairable? Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Cheers!

It operates basically the same as the rear door lock. Not even worth thinking about.Far easier to get a working 2nd hand one & fit that

I changed my rear one as I was having intermittent locking issues and managed to track it down to the rear one. Swapped it for a new unit (£215 from fords) and havent had a problem since. I took the old one apart hoping to repair any micro switches and its all a pain in the arse. Things plastic welded together, riveted etc etc. Not worth the hassle.

Side door lock is much more expensive than rear doors, oil it and see if it helps , but there's parts that wear in the gubbins of the lock so better just grab a breakers yard one

Thanks for your comments - we took it apart this week-end and something seemed to have worn so the mechanism was moving beyond the point of no return when locking. We added a spring to keep it from slipping too far and it's working (at least for now!).

Nice work. Its a shame they dont make them rebuildable considering the effort that goes into making it in the first place.
