Rear axle does it get faults?

Postby gsc1ugs » Sun Aug 01, 2021 1:19 pm

I have a noise, bad vibrating noise hitting second gear a going into third gear it feels like something is going to disintegrate, engine and box are fine, i changed the prop shaft centre bearing thinking it could be that because it was a bit worn that did not solve it, ive shook the wheels to see if its a wheel bearing but im at a loss and vehicle can not go past 2nd gear speed, anything i can check over pls?

Did you check the cross pieces when you did the centre joints?
More likely to be a tight/knackered UJ than the diff itself.

What are cross pieces please? The prop shaft looks true? What does UJ stand for?

As airthies said, check the "Cross pieces and UJ" = Universal joints. Are they ok..?? It will be pretty obvious if they are making a lot of noise, they'll be loose or have abnormal movement etc...

If the UJ's check out ok, jack the rear of the vehicle up, leave it in gear and turn one wheel, the other should turn in the opposite direction, then remove the tail shaft from the diff flange & turn the pinion by hand to see if it's smooth/rumbling or not. This will eliminate it as an obvious problem. If the noise is as bad as you say it will be easy to hear. If it was the diff itself at fault it would be noisey all the time not just in 2nd or 3rd gear.

What makes you think the gearbox is ok :?: can you select 3rd gear, have you tried to drive it in 4th gear :?:

Questions still need clarifying sorry

"Cross pieces UJ" = Universal joints.

"then remove the tail shaft from the diff flange & turn the pinion by hand to see if it's smooth/rumbling or not."

I think if you need to ask this...it's probably best to get someone who knows what they're looking at to do it.

As Bambi said...you need to eliminate the gearbox as the culprit before condemning the rear axle.

Most of the contents of the gearbox are still turning when rolling - even in neutral
