Fuel pump gasket

Postby rotory » Fri Oct 08, 2021 7:24 pm

Hi all,
I have an oil leak which seems to be coming from the fuel pump gasket area. I’ve degreased it twice but it definitely looks to be the the culprit. Is this a common leak. Obviously this will be a pump out project
I don’t understand why Ford have used a metal shim instead of a gasket.

Thank Carl
It had a new pump about 2 years ago, see me to be the culprit. Just seems strange to use a metal gasket.
Thank you.

Did you put a new gasket in there?

Check the mounting bolts are still torqued up.

Sorry for the delay with answering,
Yes a new gasket was installed with pump. I’ve bought another gasket, just waiting to get it changed.
I have check torqued the pump attachment screws, ok

You need to put sealer on the threads of the 3 bolts that secure pump to block, otherwise, oil can track down the threads of those bolts…

Cheers Frag,
Sounds easier than it looks !.
Just had a look at the new gasket, seems to be preformed with recesses and different shape tangs. Wondering if it’s installed the right way around ??

While the fuel pump is off, clean up the mating surface on the block, then put sealer on both sides of that gasket, and smear it into the threads of the 3 pump securing bolts sticking out of rear of engine block.
I’ve never had one leak using that method.

The 2 tabs on bottom can be bent around pump body to hold it in correct position once fitted.
The pre-swaged gasket,I would fit with the raised piece around centre hole facing towards pump pulley, tho I honestly don’t believe it will make any difference which way it is fitted.

The sealer we used was genuine Ford red sealer, but I’m sure it’s very expensive.
