Change Waterpump/Vacuum Pump Gasket

Postby Lifirth » Tue Oct 26, 2021 7:23 pm

Hi guys

I’ve an oil leak coming from the water pump/vacuum pump area, can anyone help with the steps to replace the gasket? How hard is it to do? I worry about taking the belt off..

Cheers!

If it’s rwd and the leak is between the vac pump and water pump you can change it without removing the belt but if it’s at the block to pump leak you will need to drain the water/ belt off when I did my mk6 water pump I removed the turbo inlet pipe and the water pipes round it and it was easy to do not done a fwd or a mk7 it’s best if you put the exact model of van you will get more detail help . Before you start try and trace where the oil is coming from and that it is only a gasket and not the pumps themselves.

I think the belt does have to come off as it drives the vac pump too. Mk6 and Mk7 2.4 RWD are similar setup.

Can't be a FWD as the vac pump is nowhere near the water pump.

The. Mk6 2.4 you can remove the vac pump without disturbing the water pump to change the gasket in between belt only needs to come off to remove the water pump when I looked at the works mk7 it looked to be easier as more room at the top of the engine.

What's the worry about taking a fan belt off ???? It's not as if it's a timing belt

My thoughts exactly...TBH I can't see how you'd remove the Vac pump without taking the belt off..unless you want to break fingers etc...there's quite a bit of force on the tensioner.

On my mk6 135 tdci the vac pump was bolted on the rear end of the water pump that’s why I’m saying that to work on the vac pump only you don’t need to touch the belt .

Thanks!

Do I need to take the bumper off to get access to anything?

Ummm....I don't think so..Here's the water pump for the Mk6 2.4 TDDi & TDCi and you can clearly see where the vacuum pump bolts "on top" of the water pump. Mk7 2.4 is the same.

No....the belt tensioner can be a bit of a pig if it's seized but can easily be done without removing anything major. Three bolts hold the vac pump onto the water pump, don't over tighten them when refitting, the thread in the water pump is only aluminium. There's two types of gaskets too, one with moulded O-rings and one without...the water pump will determine which is required.

Here's an exploded view of the vacuum pump and the gasket between it and the water pump.

Mk6 & Mk7 2.4 vac/water pumps are essentially the same.

Here they are bolted together..:
