Fuel pump/ injector knock?

Postby Reidsrepairs » Mon Nov 29, 2021 12:36 pm

Hi all,
I have a 2008 2.4 RWD that has started making a knocking noise at 2k revs with foot flat to the floor. Normally happens in 3rd, 4th and 5th. Started quietly good few weeks ago and now is louder. I'm not 100% where it's coming from so wonder if anyone has had experience with similar problem or has an idea what could be the cause. Thanks.

A good place to start looking would be in the area of the injectors. Is there a build up of dirt/oil/muck around the base of the injectors?

3 of them (2 closest to firewall and 1 furthest away seem wet and black around them, the firewall sound proofing is black and wet too, but not sure if that's recent as its always been like that.

It's a fairly common problem with these engines, due to the idiotic single M6 bolt, with a double ended clamp, holding down a pair of injectors.
If the bolt loosens for any reason, the injectors will 'bounce' up and down in the cylinder, thus destroying the copper sealing washer at the base of the injector.
Mine, when they went, sounded like the small ends had given up the ghost, so I drove it 50 miles home trying not to accelerate too often!

All sorted, tightened both down for now and sorted the noise. Will put new washers in this week when I get chance, thanks again.

Replace the bolts when you do it, they're single use only, and can snap in the head,
