Can a rough idle be caused by computer reset?

Postby Alex-9000 » Fri Dec 03, 2021 2:46 am

Hi All,

I have a 2010 transit that I got second hand, so far it has been very solid mechanically. Yesterday I tried to reset the computer by turning the key from off to acc 8 times in rapid succession (whether or not this actually reset anything, i'm not sure). Later that day, in bumper to bumper traffic, the idle became very rough and the engine cut out. I've had the van for a few months now with 0 issues, 215k on the clock. Just wondering if I reset something, or if this is more likely mechanical (injectors, electrical?).

While this was happening, my phone which was plugged into the 12V was connecting/disconnecting from the charge, which makes me think it's potentially electrical?

Thanks!

Turning the ignition off and on 8 times on a Mk7 does nothing but wear out your key and barrel.

The same procedure is used on a Mk6 to code the key fob.

Does you mileage/odometer have "- - - -" in it..

As sort of mentioned above, your key cycling may have been the final straw for the notoriously delicate ignition switch contactor block. Try a new one, they are only a few squids.

the odo has "- - - -" where the fuel range is while in accessory mode, which is replaced by the range when the van is on

It sounds like the front one is dead, or nearly so. I would get them both tested, or replaced, if they are originals.

What Altransit said, you front battery is fugged or close to it.....get them properly load tested.

Both are cooked. Rear one tested at 87Ah, front at ~250Ah. Will get them both replaced. Question is, is this what caused the rough idle/stall? If so, could someone explain how? Is it just a matter of not enough current to the glow plugs or injectors or something? I would have thought that while the van is running the current is supplied by the alternator, but perhaps at low RPM it couldn't provide the juice.

Was also thinking that earlier in the drive i briefly felt what felt like a turbo lag/stutter (dont know the correct term), could be related... Bought this van from auction, this is what i signed up for! :P

Poorly battery/ies can and do cause all sorts of electrical gremlins.

Out with the old, in with the new. Got these on sale today for $223 AUD each (118 GBP). 730CCA and 80Ah. Will give the van a drive later and see how she goes. Cheers for everyone's help :)

I put a pair of these in mine 850CCA. They "just" fit with about 5mm to spare at each end.

Be sure to swap them front to rear every 6 months or so to share the load. Front battery does most of the work.

Those are definitely some chad batteries, great deal too.

Thanks for your help mate, so far no issues with the van after a week :)
