Converting 6 speed to 5?

Postby gtturbo87uk » Wed Jan 26, 2022 11:04 pm

Does anyone know what’s needs to be changed if I fit a 5 speed box in a 6 speed van? I got the 5 speed box, linkage and cables. Are the drive shafts different and are the hubs different. Any help would be appreciated

Assuming it's a Mk7 FWD as it's a 6 speed..?? You don't say what it is.

You'll need the gear lever in the dash and it's cables linkages as well. I believe the drive shafts are a different spline count and gearbox mount may be different. Hubs should be the same. Not sure about the reverse light switch plug, might be the same.

Final drive ratios will be different so your road speed vs rpm won't be the same. 5 speed only came in 4.23 & 4.54.....6 speed only comes in 4.36 and 4.93.

Speedo works off your abs so still read your speed ok but like his lordship mentioned revs will be bit different, hubs are the same, not sure about driveshaft, gearbox mount I think is different, clutch is different, if you have dual mass flywheel put a solid /single mass on it
What hp is it

Euro 5 I'm not sure about the flywheel/clutch side of things , gear box bell housing bolt holes should fit as E5 is basically same block as E4 but if crank maybe different but if the solid flywheel from the E 4 fits the crank you'll be good to go, bit trial and error possibly but keep us posted
Ma Euto4 5spd is just starting to rattle a bit in neutral after 653,000mls so definitely stronger than the 6spd

I own 2 transit tippers, one with 6gears, the other 5+1. As far as i know the differential shape and bolts house is the same, but have diferent driveshaft because 5speed gearbox is shorter than the other one.
