Annoying squeal like fanbelt slipping

Postby trannyfreak » Thu Jun 30, 2022 7:43 pm

Hi all,on my mk6 2.4 rwd transit i got annoying squeal like the fan belt slightly slipping, I've swapped the fan belt, tensioner, alternator, power steering pump, guide wheel, and the complete fan/bearing and it's still bloody there, it sounds like it's coming from the front centre of the engine area but can't understand what the hell it is, can anyone give me any ideas many thanks

Had the same and convinced it was belt/pulley related. Turned out to be the bloody dust covers on the prop bearing so out came the Dremel and all is quiet again.

Spray a little water on a pully. If the noise goes away for a second you want a belt.

He's already put a new belt on it.

As it gets louder when revved up it , it might be a dry bearing , my alternator on a ford granada did it .

Dont mean its all good. Mine is 18 month old and did under 2000 miles. Its been off and on a lot due to pump change, then timing chain, then having to re seal the timing chain cover, Change both pullies so aye. The poor thing is minging and also chirping. New one in the post.

Another vote for alternator clutch bearing! I had same issue and it chirped like a bird much worse at particular engine speeds - resonant bearing wobble/vibration...

The dust cap on the clutch was missing and road grime had ruined the bearings.

You can try removing the belt and clean the grooves with a wire brush and also the grooves on all the pulleys . Another thing to try is to use a different brand of belt .
